Are you planning a party and wondering how to decorate your own party? Here are 3 easy steps to guide you in the right direction.
This is the approach we use to plan and decorate all of our parties and events. We at Ethos Events have years of experience planning and decorating parties and have found the foolproof method to help you decorate your own party!
The first step to any successfully designed party or event is the invitations. There are so many helpful websites to help you design your own or you can leave it up to a talented artist to bring your ideas to life. This is an invite designed by one of our clients for her daughter’s ‘Fairy First Birthday.’ We used this as the inspiration for the event decor and decorations.

Step 1. Organise a Backdrop
Organising a backdrop for you party or event will make a huge difference to your party atmosphere and decor. The backdrop not only works as a centrepiece for the decor but also as the designated photo shoot area. The backdrop should match your theme and accentuate your venue. We like to have large backdrops which we sometimes call set-ups as they work more as an atmospheric element rather than just a single backdrop. Single backdrops are fine and dandy however, they tend to get lost behind your guests in photos. The purpose of the backdrop/ set-ups at Ethos Events are to add special elements to your photos. They are designed and built to be seen even with your guests huddled in front.
Alara’s mum commissioned us at Ethos Events to custom make Alara’s Fairy First Birthday backdrop. We used the invite and a mood board made by Alara’s mum for inspiration and the general vibe.

Step 2. Decorate your Table Scapes
This one might come as a surprise, but a huge impact is made by decorating your tables. Now envision this, not only your cake table and food tables but the tables you’ve set out for your guests to sit at. The first element is getting good tablecloths, no matter how intricate and amazing your table scape is, a plastic see-through table cloth will let your display down. Table cloths don’t need to be expensive, head down to your local craft store (mine is spotlight or lincraft) and have a look at their discounted fabrics. Nearly any fabric will work wonders and make such a difference in your table scape and decor.

Get creative (but stay on theme) with your table’s centrepieces. Think florals, pom poms, fruits and veggies, toys. Anything is fair play.

Another small element that makes a huge impact on your decor is name cards. Make name cards with your guests names to add an extra element of design and decor.

Step 3. Keep it Cohesive
The main thing when you decorate your own party is to remember to keep it cohesive. Have a colour palette that you follow, stick to the same fonts and use a couple of different textures.
Use your backdrop to inspire your table scape, take some textures and florals from your backdrop and re-design it for your table scapes. For instance from Alara’s Fairy First Birthday you could take the fairy wings as inspiration and use them as the shape for your name cards. How cute would that be!?
