Party Styling: The Beginners Guide

Party styling and simple tips and tricks are really all you need to transform your party into something spectacular. It can be tricky to begin with but don’t let that stop you from trying. We will show you easy tips and tricks that anyone can accomplish.

Here’s some fun things you’ll learn in this guide:

Party Styling & The Theme

The first decision you make about party styling is your theme for your party/event. For the purpose of this guide we will use an example of super fun engagement party we styled.
Don’t let expectations overwhelm you, your theme can be literally (and we mean literally) ANYTHING! Here are some themes we have worked with and some we would love to:

  • Fairy First Birthday
  • The Sky
  • classy
  • Floral
  • Pinks
  • Romance
  • Casino

Just think about what kind of aesthetic and vibe you are after, for the engagement party our clients theme was ‘outdoor festival but make it classy.’ This included an outdoor venue, food trucks and colourful decor. You also don’t need to advertise your theme, it can just be your muse to your design process.

The Invitations and Party Styling

What most people don’t realise about your invitations is that it is more than just a piece of paper (or digital image) that tells your guests the details about your party or event. Your invitations are the first sense of party styling your guests absorb. Your invitation will set your guest’s expectations of what to expect for your party and what they’re in for. They also subconsciously help your guests decide what to wear and how to feel about your event.
Our Clients invitations were colourful, fun and vibrant. Just looking at the invite her guests knew what they were in for and all dressed to the occasion.

The Backdrop

A main aspect of our party styling for the engagement was to create a decor focal point. Our client was after a custom backdrop that was simple and acted more as decor than as a photo opportunity. We styled an alternate space for photo opportunities which worked beautifully with our client’s photographers.

Custom Backdrop built for Matt and Kat's engagement party in the shape of an MK

Party styling with Matt and Kat’s custom backdrop. They wanted to use their fonts from their invitation and extract the letters for their names to create a focal point for their decor. We combined the MK from their invites in the same font and altered a few design elements to allow for the letters to cohesively join together. We then build and cut our the selected design, braced it and hand painted it. Due to this backdrop being outside we had to brace the backdrop EXTRA securely with more weight than usual.

Table Settings for Party Styling

Something we see getting missed with party styling is the table settings. Table settings can create a harmonious and cohesive look with your party and event. It can be a simple touch of colour or decor that can make a huge difference. For instance the most important part of styling your table setting is the table cloth. Any table cloth in plastic will not do. Although we understand that plastic table cloths are the most economic way to table setting, they are not doing any favours to your decor. If you’re looking for a cost efficient table cloth that isn’t those crappy plastic ones you get from the dollar store we recommend getting bargain fabric.

Party Styling and Sporadic Decor

With party styling, there are no rules, if there is something you want at your party you can have it. Matt and Kat both wanted to have fun and eccentric styling at their party. They wanted tidbits of decor and candles in random spots and areas to ensure a cohesive and harmonious theme of colours that would not be missed. Here are some photos of examples:

The Outfits and Styling

Matt and Kat wanted a lot of cohesive elements in their party styling but also in their outfits. Can you notice that Kat’s earrings and Matt’s cufflinks are the same red and gold heart? How stunning, such a small little nod at cohesiveness and harmony. Their jewellery is from the stunning collection at Valere.
