Find your Theme
The first step to successfully decorating your party is to outline your theme. A theme allows you (the party decorator) to easily make decisions for location, guest list and of course party decorations. A theme not only helps you out but also your guests, it gives them an idea on the attire recommended, what to expect and what sort of gift to give. Some themes help in specific points of the decorating process also, for example a dinosaur theme is synonymous with greens. Of course it doesn’t have to be related however if you need a little help, which is most likely why you’re here, then this is a handy tool to help you on your way.
Set out a Budget
Setting out a budget doesn’t need to be a big deal. I don’t know about you but whenever budgeting is involved I get a little bit of the ick. It could be as simple as setting out a few hundred dollars aside for decorations or seeing whats out there and letting a styler get their hands dirty. The best way I find to budget party decorating is figuring out first, what the most important elements of the party decorations are and assigning them with high priority. For example if we are throwing a fairy party for your little girls first birthday and you really want a beautiful backdrop to be the main stage for all photos and cake cutting, then add that to the top of the list. You’ll find you can get away with minimal party decorations when you have larger focal points like these. If you still want to add some party decorations to the fairy first birthday decide what is next on your list. Is it beautiful tablecloth draping or a stunning dessert table, could it be the invitations or balloons? All you need for your party decorations to be impressive is consistency and harmony.
Choose a Colour Palette
Once you’ve got your theme or even if you’ve chosen to go themeless the next step is to find your colour palette. This is most important if you don’t have a theme to help you follow some structure with your decorating process. The best way is to find one or two colours you know you want to include and see what is already out there.
Decide on Focal Points
So we just mentioned focal points for your party styling and if you asked yourself.. what in the world is that, then read along while we explain. Think of it as what do you/your guests want to see as they walk into your party is a welcome sign as they enter important to you, possibly a beautiful backdrop for speeches and cake cutting or are you more focused on minimal styling like keeping all your table cloths consistent and napkins to one colour? Firstly choose whats important for your party decorations.

Grazing Table as Party Decoration Melbourne
This one could be a little unconventional, but who are we kidding we LOVE unconventional. A grazing table shouldn’t be left at just the awesome food, when we work with caterers we really see the difference between those you provide just food and those who STYLE their food and their grazing tables. Using your grazing table as a point of interest at your party is a huge advantage. Not only can you add little mementos in between fabulous food but imagine how creative you could get with your food labels.
